Provenance
Provenance:A Massachusetts collection.Note: James Lawrence was a hero of the War of 1812. Just after the commencement of the conflict, Lawrence, commander of the USS Hornet, became the first American naval officer to capture a British vessel, the privateer Dolphin. A year later, as commander of the USS Chesapeake, in an unsuccessful encounter with the HMS Shannon, Lawrence was mortally wounded. Before his death, he famously issued the command, "Don't give up the ship."
